Video-based, automatic research grade contact angle measuring device 


Contact angle measuring device for the automatic measurement of the wetting behavior of solids, as well as for series tests and systematic analysis. The OCA 20 enables the reduction of subjective factors and time involved for contact angle measurements in research, quality and production inspection.

For the software-controlled measurement and analysis of:

  • static and dynamic contact angle according to the Sessile and Captive Drop method

  • analysis of the drop shape according to the Pendant Drop method

  • wetting behavior on solid surfaces

  • surface free energy of solids and their components

  • surface and interfacial tension out of the analysis of the drop shape

  • movie function and dynamic tracking for absorption kinetics study

  • great modular concept design provides a future upgrade and operational flexibility

The OCA 20 consists of the basic instrument with the following technical equipment:

  • Dosing bay for installation of the electrical syringe units and single or multiple (max. 4) needle support with a vertical and horizontal fine adjustment

  • Measuring stage is adjustable 3-dimensionally in X, Y- and Z- axis for accurate sample positioning and drop pick up from the dosing needle (upgradeable to a motorized sample stage)

  • Lens mounted with adjustable tilt 

  • High-performance six-fold power zoom lens with an integrated continuous fine focus

  • High-speed video system with adapter and CCD-camera

  • High-performance video digitizing board (frame grabber) for the PC

  • Halogen lighting with continuously adjustable intensity without hysteresis for a homogeneous back lighting which facilitates operations under any lighting environment

  • Control and measuring electronics with built-in digital temperature display and serial RS 232C interface

  • Power supply with an automatic voltage adjustment function

The 32-bit modular Windows NT based software SCA developed for Windows 2000/XP offers by various expansion steps.  The analyses according to different methods were build-in the software.
